We are passionate about staying up-to-date with the latest research and evidence-based innovations in autism early intervention. BAC are proud to be the first and only provider of the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) in the UK. The ESDM is an evidence-based approach and was named one of the Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2012 by Time Magazine. The ESDM is an appropriate approach for children to commence between the ages of 12 months and 3 years. Children older than three years may continue on an ESDM programme however if a child is 4 years or older we recommend commencing on an ABA programme. To find out more about BAC’s ESDM programmes, please attend one of our information sessions or contact us to arrange a phone consultation.
The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is a comprehensive evidence-based behavioural early intervention program for children with autism.
A randomized clinical trial of the ESDM, conducted over 5 years at the University of Washington, found that children in the ESDM intervention group on average had a 18 point increase in IQ scores, compared to a 4 point increase for the children attending community-based therapy programs. Over 2 years in an ESDM program, receiving 20 hours per week of 1:1 ESDM from trained therapists and their parents, the children had greater improvements in cognitive, language abaility and adaptive behaviour, as well as fewer autism symptoms, than the children who received other community-based interventions. Recent research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that the ESDM treatment normalised brain functioning, and is the first study to demonstrate that an autism early intervention program can normalise brain activity. The randomized, case-controlled, multi-centre study found that children who received the ESDM exhibited greater brain activation when viewing faces rather than objects, a response that was typical of the normal children in the study, and the opposite of children with autism who received other interventions. What is the Early Start Denver Model?
The ESDM outlines both what and how to teach toddlers with autism. It integrates a relationship- focused developmental model with the well-validated teaching practices of Applied Behaviour Analysis. It is developed by a trained multi-disciplinary team, including Psychologists, Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Teachers, and Behaviour Analysts, all in strong partnership with families and pediatricians, where required.
The ESDM is delivered by Certified ESDM therapists. To become certified in the ESDM, professionals must work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, hold postgraduate qualifications and a strong background in autism early intervention before training for many months in the treatment delivery and being assessed by the MIND Institute trainers. For a list of Certified ESDM Therapists, click here. Details on the training qualifications and processes can be found here.
Nicola Easton is currently completing certification in ESDM therapy.
